Froio and McLee lead Panthers with three wins each
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team finished in 12th place out of 14 schools Saturday at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) "Headlock for Hunger" Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State University at the Tinsley Center.
The Panthers, seeded ninth, dropped their opening match to eighth-seeded Norwich, 34-12. PSU was then upset by #13-seeded Trinity College, 31-12, and the Panthers wrapped up the day with a 28-21 loss to #10 seed University of Southern Maine.
Top-seeded Roger Williams University defeated #2-seeded Johnson & Wales University in the championship match, 27-8.
Freshmen Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) and Bruce McLee (Washingtonville, N.Y.) led the Panthers with victories in all three matches, Froio at 174 pounds and McLee at 197. Froio, ranked sixth in New England at 174, went 3-0 to improve his season record to 15-3, while McLee improved to 9-4. One member from each of the14 institutions was selected to the All-Tournament Team, and PSU was represented by Froio.
Freshman Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) and sophomore Justin Montgomery (Natick, Mass.) posted 2-1 records on the afternoon for PSU, Aumann at 125 pounds and Montgomery at 184. Aumann is now 15-6 on the season, tied with Froio for the most wins on the season, and Montgomery is now 9-5. Sophomore Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) won one of his three bouts at 149 pounds.
PSU will be back in action next Saturday at a quad meet at WPI, along with Coast Guard, Southern Maine and SUNY Brockport.
