Panthers battle injuries, drop both bouts in home finale
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team dropped the final two home matches of the season Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium Saturday afternoon, falling to Johnson & Wales University, 48-0, and Springfield College, 33-15.
JWU, ranked #2 in New England and #13 nationally in Division III, also defeated Springfield in the middle match of the day, 28-12. The Wildcats are now 16-6 in duals this season while Springfield, ranked sixth in New England, is 12-9 and Plymouth State is 3-9.
JWU swept all 10 bouts against the Panthers, including two by forfeit. The Wildcats had seven wrestlers who are individually ranked in New England earn victories, while PSU's only ranked wrestler is injured and did not compete.
The Panthers, who have been hampered by injuries this season, were bolstered by four freshmen who posted victories against Springfield. Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) won his bout in overtime at 125 pounds; Zack Cassidy (Griswold, Conn.) won by decision at 141 pounds; Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) pulled out a 3-1 decision at 174 pounds; and Bruce McLee (Washingtonville, N.Y.) won by forfeit at 197 pounds.
The Panthers wrap up the dual match portion of the season next Sunday, Feb. 14, in a tri-meet at Western New England University with Daniel Webster College.
