Panther freshman earns All-New England honors for Panthers
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A freshman on the Plymouth State University wrestling team earned All-New England honors Sunday for his top-six finish at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championships, hosted by Springfield College.
Freshman Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) finished in sixth place in the 125-pound bracket to earn All-Region recognition. He finished 3-3 in the tournament, with all three losses to wrestlers who were ranked in the top five in New England.
After a first-round loss at 125 to third-seeded Matt Morris of Williams College, Aumann posted three consecutive victories in the consolation bracket, capped by a win by fall over fourth-seeded Nick Barbaria of Roger Williams University. A second loss to Morris sent Aumann into the fifth-sixth place bout, where he was defeated by fifth-seeded Jacob Forsman of Norwich University. Aumann completes an outstanding rookie season with a 20-12 record.
Junior Clay Callahan (Milford, Conn.) was the only other Panther wrestler to advance to Sunday's rounds, and he was eliminated in his first bout at 165 pounds to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record. Callahan finishes his season with a 13-9 mark and a 51-29 career record.
The Panthers finished 15th out of 18 schools in the team standings. Ithaca College pulled out the team title with 144 points, with Roger Williams University runner-up with 136.5 points and SUNY-Cortland (119) rounding out the top three. PSU scored 18 points, ahead of 16th-place Trinity College (11.5) and just a half-point back of 14th-place Western New England University (18.5).
