Aumann, Froio represent Panthers on All-Rookie Team
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University wrestlers have been recognized for their outstanding seasons in 2015-16 with post-season honors from the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).
Freshmen Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) and Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) were named to the NEWA All-Rookie Team, and Aumann earned Honorable Mention on the All-New England Team. Aumann was honored in the 125-pound weight class and Froio in the 174-pound division. The NEWA post-season awards are voted on a committee of four NEWA head coaches.
Aumann wrapped up an outstanding rookie campaign with a 20-12 record, leading the Panthers in victories. He was a place-winner in four tournaments, capturing first place at the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine, fourth place at the Jim Aguiar Invitational at PSU, and sixth place at the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College and the NCAA Regionals, also at Springfield College. Aumann finished 3-3 in the NCAA Regional tournament, with all three losses to wrestlers who were ranked in the top five in New England.
Froio posted an 18-8 record for the Panthers this season, ranking second on the team in victories. He was in and out of the New England rankings this winter in his weight class, and he won the 174-pound bracket at the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine and the Jim Aguiar Invitational at PSU. Froio also represented PSU on the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team.
Aumann and Froio were the leaders on a Panther team that finished with a 3-10 overall record in 2015-16 under third-year head coach Ryan Schieding. The Panthers placed 11th at the New England Dual Meet Championships and 15th at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.
