Aumann wraps up season among nation's best
LA CROSSE, Wisc. – Plymouth State University sophomore wrestler Joe Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) was knocked out of competition during day one of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse on Friday.
Aumann, led by fourth-year head coach Ryan Schieding, wraps up his season with a team-best mark of 28-10 wrestling primarily at 125-pounds. He became the first Panther grappler to compete at the NCAA Championships since Mike Willey earned All-American status during the 2011-12 season.
Plymouth State was one of 68 teams represented at the championships and ended the opening day in a 15-way tie for 54th place. Wartburg College (IA) and Augsburg College (MN), the top two teams in the nation, held the top two spots after Friday's bouts.
The championships will conclude Saturday evening.

* Aumann opened the tournament against #5-ranked Arnulfo Olea of Wartburg College. Olea struck first with a takedown, but Aumann's escape narrowed the deficit to 2-1. Another Olea takedown upped the advantage to 4-1, but Aumann scored on a reversal to make it 4-3 after the first period.
* Aumann evened the score at 4-4 with an escape early in the second period, but Olea scored his third takedown of the bout as the period came to an end to take a 6-4 lead into the final two minutes.
* Aumann kept things close through the majority of the final period. Olea upped his advantage with a reversal, but Aumann answered with an escape to make it 8-5. After another Olea takedown Aumann earned another escape and the score was 10-6 with 13 seconds to go. Olea scored a flurry of points in the final seconds to earn a 16-6 major decision victory.
* Aumann moved to the consolation bracket where he faced sophomore Travis Jones of Millikin University (IL). Jones scored a win by fall at 1:01, knocking Aumann out of contention.
