Panthers finish with five wins by fall
HENNIKER, N.H. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team opened up its 2017-18 season with a 33-17 victory over New England College at the Live Free or Die Dual in Bridges Gym on Saturday.
The Pilgrims got out to an early 4-0 lead following a 16-5 major decision win in the 174 weight class by sophomore Malik Settles (Lowell, Mass.) over freshman Tom Hamel (Holderness, N.H.).
The Panthers answered with three straight pins to take an 18-4 lead. Senior Justin Montgomery (Natick, Mass.), freshman Dylan Da Silva (Bayville, N.J.) and classmate Antonio Difronzo (Melrose, Mass.) all won by fall at 185, 197 and 285 respectively.
NEC responded with 10 points in the next two bouts. A major decision win at 125, followed by a win by fall at 133, pulled NEC to within 18-14.
The Panthers followed with three straight wins. Sophomore Tom Pagliarulo (Haverhill, Mass.) won a 9-8 decision at 141, before classmate Steve Abusheery (North Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) won by fall at 157 and 165 to give PSU a 33-14 lead.
The Pilgrims rounded out the scoring with a 10-3 decision at 165.
Both teams will be back in action next Saturday (Nov. 18) when they make the trip to Springfield College for the annual Doug Parker Invitational, starting at 10:00 a.m.
