Da Silva, Simeti continue to lead Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team scored 18 points in the final four bouts to earn a 27-19, come-from-behind win over Norwich University at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House on Wednesday evening.
Norwich jumped out to a 16-0 advantage after wins at 133-, 141- and 149-pounds. Simeti earned six points for PSU with a pin at 3:07 in the 157-pound weight class, and junior Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) earned three big points with a hard-fought 2-0 decision.
Norwich senior Donte Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) briefly slowed the PSU momentum with a 12-7 decision over freshman Tom Hamel (Holderness, N.H.) at 174-pounds, but Da Silva controlled at 184-pounds and earned a pin in 2:29 to cut the deficit to 19-15.
Freshman Antonio Difronzo (Melrose, Mass.) battled to a 7-3 decision at 197-pounds and senior Trevor Wassell (Walpole, Mass.) narrowly topped freshman Morgan Yates (Gold Bar, Wash.) in the heavyweight bout to give PSU a 21-19 lead, and freshman Mike Titus (Saugus, Mass.) grabbed six easy points with a win by forfeit in the last bout to account for the final score.
With his win Da Silva runs his record to 11-1 to open the year, with four wins coming by pin. Simeti improved to 9-4 and leads the team with five pins.
PSU wraps up the fall semester with a double dual meet with the University of Southern Maine and Rhode Island College in Gorham, Maine on Saturday. The first bout is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
