PSU Wrestling comes back to top Norwich in home opener

Da Silva, Simeti continue to lead Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team scored 18 points in the final four bouts to earn a 27-19, come-from-behind win over Norwich University at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House on Wednesday evening.

Freshman Dylan Da Silva (Bayville, N.J.) and senior Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) continued their strong starts to the season as each earned a win by fall.

Norwich jumped out to a 16-0 advantage after wins at 133-, 141- and 149-pounds. Simeti earned six points for PSU with a pin at 3:07 in the 157-pound weight class, and junior Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) earned three big points with a hard-fought 2-0 decision.

Norwich senior Donte Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) briefly slowed the PSU momentum with a 12-7 decision over freshman Tom Hamel (Holderness, N.H.) at 174-pounds, but Da Silva controlled at 184-pounds and earned a pin in 2:29 to cut the deficit to 19-15.

Freshman Antonio Difronzo (Melrose, Mass.) battled to a 7-3 decision at 197-pounds and senior Trevor Wassell (Walpole, Mass.) narrowly topped freshman Morgan Yates (Gold Bar, Wash.) in the heavyweight bout to give PSU a 21-19 lead, and freshman Mike Titus (Saugus, Mass.) grabbed six easy points with a win by forfeit in the last bout to account for the final score.

With his win Da Silva runs his record to 11-1 to open the year, with four wins coming by pin. Simeti improved to 9-4 and leads the team with five pins.

PSU wraps up the fall semester with a double dual meet with the University of Southern Maine and Rhode Island College in Gorham, Maine on Saturday. The first bout is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
