PSU Wrestler earns NEWA honors

Da Silva named Co-Rookie Wrestler of the Week 

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The top rookie on the Plymouth State University wrestling team has been recognized by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA).

            Freshman Dylan Da Silva (Bayville, N.J.) was named Co-NEWA Rookie Wrestler of the Week after going 4-0 and winning the 184-pound bracket at the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine last weekend.

            Da Silva opened the tournament with a pin in just 57 seconds, before earning three straight decisions to earn the individual title. He topped sophomore Jeremy Berson (Tucson, Ariz.) of the Coast Guard Academy, 5-1, before knocking off the top-seed, sophomore Wes Sorey (Chesapeake, Va.) of the Apprentice School, 12-5, in the semifinal. Da Silva ended the day with a 7-5 decision over Coast Guard freshman Jon Wagner (Huntington, Pa.).

            The rookie has posted an 11-1 mark overall, earning four pins in the process.

            The Panthers are off until Saturday, Jan. 6, when they compete at the Williams Open.
