PSU Wrestling competes at Williams Open

Simeti takes second at 157-pounds 

            WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Senior Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) won three bouts on his way to a second place finish at the Williams Open at Lasell Gym on Saturday.

            The tournament was an individual event made up of 129 competitors, but no team points were tallied.

            Simeti continued his strong senior campaign, sporting a 3-1 record while wrestling at 157-pounds. After recording a technical fall win over Castleton University's Ryan Haff, Simeti earned consecutive wins by fall to earn a spot in the first place match, where Cameron Altobelli of Johnson & Wales earned a pin in 2:05.

            Classmate Moises Diaz (Manchester, N.H.) and juniors Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) and Kevin Ell (Derry, N.H.) each went 2-2 on the day.

            Diaz, wrestling at 165-pounds, opened with a 9-2 decision over Chris Munnell of Springfield College, before falling to Nick Anselmi of Williams by a 15-9 decision. He earned a win by fall over Springfield Tech's Ryan Williams before being forced out by injury default in the consolation semifinals.

            Froio split a pair of decisions at 174-pounds to open the day, winning 3-1 over Dylan Millson of Williams before falling 5-2 to Ryan Guers of Western New England. Froio earned a pin in just 45 seconds over teammate Ryan Palmer (Stamford, Conn.) in the consolation bracket, before falling to Richard Viruet of Springfield Tech by pin.

            Ell started the day with a pair of pins at 285-pounds. He topped Castleton's Jacob Ives in 59 seconds, then advanced past Nicholas Beauchamp of Williams College in 2:50, before suffering a 3-1 overtime loss to Nicholas Scott of Castleton in the semifinal. Ell ended his day in a battle with Brian Donavan of Bay State Wrestling Club, ultimately losing by fall in 6:35.

            The Panthers host the annual Jim Aguiar Invitational next Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Bank of New Hampshire Field House at ALLWell North. The event starts at 10:00 a.m.
