Simeti, Ell with strong showings for Panthers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) won three bouts and junior Kevin Ell (Derry, N.H.) was perfect on the day as the Plymouth State University wrestling team placed 12th at the annual New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships hosted by Johnson & Wales University at the Providence Career & Technical Academy on Sunday.
Simeti was named to the NEWA All-Tournament Team, as the Panthers finished 1-3 on the day. Johnson & Wales topped Roger Williams University in the final, with WPI, Coast Guard Academy and Castleton University rounding out the top five. Southern Maine finished sixth, as Wesleyan, Springfield, Williams and Western New England made up the rest of the top ten. Trinity College topped the Panthers in the 11th place match, with Norwich, Rhode Island College, Bridgewater State and New England College filling spots 13-16.
PSU opened the day against #17 Roger Williams University, falling by a 42-6 score. Plymouth rebounded with a 25-21 win over Bridgewater State, before suffering a 35-15 defeat at the hands of Western New England. The Panthers wrapped up the day with a narrow 24-19 loss to Trinity.
Ell finished the day with a 4-0 mark, earning wins in four different ways while competing at 285-pounds. He was gifted a forfeit win against Roger Williams, won by a disqualification against Bridgewater State, earned a win by decision (1-0) against Western New England and ended the day with a win by fall, in just 1:23, against Trinity.
Simeti finished 3-1 in the 157-pound class. Simeti fell to Tyler Gazaway, the #4 wrestler in New England at 157-pounds, by a narrow 6-4 decision, but rebounded to earn an 11-0 major decision victory over Bridgewater State. He added a win by pin against Western New England and ended the day with a 4-3 decision over Trinity.

Junior Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) also performed well, posting a 2-2 mark on the day while competing at 165-pounds. Froio started the day against the #2 wrestler in the region, Roger Williams' Taylor Shay, but was not overmatched falling by just a 3-1 decision. He earned a 9-1 major decision against Bridgewater State and was impressive in a 3-1 decision win over Davey Goodall of Western New England, who was ranked #6 in the region coming into the weekend. Froio suffered another close loss in his final bout, falling in a 3-2 decision.
Also competing for the Panthers were freshman Mike Titus (Saugus, Mass.), sophomores Eddie Bello (West Hartford, Conn.) and Steve Abusheery (North Attleboro, Mass.), junior Kevin Thomas (Stamford, Conn.) and seniors Justin Montgomery (Natick, Mass.) and Trevor Wassell (Walpole, Mass.).
The Panthers will be back in Providence, R.I. next Sunday (Jan. 28) for the Johnson & Wales Open.
