Simeti, Montgomery close out careers as Panthers' season comes to an end
WORCESTER, Mass. – Plymouth State University seniors Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Justin Montgomery (Natick, Mass.) were both eliminated in their first bouts of day two of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional wrestling championships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Sunday.
The top three wrestlers from each weight class advance to wrestle at the NCAA National Championships in two weeks. Both Simeti and Montgomery needed to win three consecutive bouts in order to finish third.
Simeti, wrestling at 157-pounds, fell to Williams College senior Jake Savoca by a 13-4 major decision. He wraps up the tournament with a 2-2 mark and finishes his season with a 24-10 record with 11 wins by fall. His 24 wins and 11 pins easily led the team. Simeti ends his career with an overall mark of 56-54.
Wrestling at 184-pounds, Montgomery was knocked out by sophomore Henry Oberlander of Bridgewater State University in his first action on Sunday by virtue of a 10-5 decision. He finished 1-2 on the weekend and 13-12 for the season, finishing the year with the second most wins behind Simeti. He ends his career with a 36-42 record.
Also wrestling for the Panthers over the weekend were freshman Mike Titus (Saugus, Mass.) at 125-pounds, sophomore Eddie Bello (West Hartford, Conn.) at 141-pounds, sophomore Steve Abusheery (North Attleboro, Mass.) at 149-pounds, senior Moises Diaz (Manchester, N.H.) at 174-pounds, senior Trevor Wassell (Walpole, Mass.) at 197-pounds and junior Kevin Ell (Derry, N.H.) at 285-pounds.
PSU finished the tournament with 10.0 points to finish 16th out of 17 teams, ahead of Rhode Island College. #4 Johnson & Wales University earned the team title with 156.5 points, with #21 Worcester Polytechnic Institute (92.5) and Wesleyan University (91.5) rounding out the top three.
Led by fifth-year head coach Ryan Schieding the Panthers went 3-9 in dual meets this winter. The weekend marks the end of the careers of Diaz, Montgomery, Simeti and Wassell.
