Thomas, Sardella pick up wins on final day
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Juniors Kevin Thomas (Stamford, Conn.) and Derek Sardella (Billerica, Mass.) each picked up wins on the final day of action as the Plymouth State University wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Roger Williams University Invitational on Saturday.
Thomas finished the day 1-2, picking up a win by fall over the eighth seed at 184 pounds, while Sardella picked up a win by forfeit at 174 pounds.
Plymouth State ended up 16th out of 17. Johnson & Wales, the top-ranked team in the latest New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) poll claimed the top spot with 174 points. PSU finished with 18.5, just two points behind Norwich and ahead of the University of New Hampshire.

How it Happened:
- After earning a bye into the round of 16, Thomas squared off with the seventh seed in his class, Josh Smith of Southern Maine, and lost by fall in 2:34. He recovered with an impressive showing that culminated in a pin of eighth-seeded Alexander Green of Castleton to advance in the consolation bracket, before being pinned in his final bout.
- Sardella, who went 1-1 on Friday, opened Saturday with a win by forfeit, but he was cut down by NYU's Gabe Rodrigues in a 10-1 major decision to close the weekend with a 2-2 record.
- Also competing on day two of action were freshmen Tyler O'Mara (Litchfield, N.H.), Trevor O'Mara (Litchfield, N.H.), Josh Fernandez (Haverstraw, N.Y.), Colin Mengold (Shelton, Conn.), Noah Giffard (Concord, N.H.) and Christian Kuechler (Chester, N.H.).
- Plymouth State is back on the mat next Saturday (Nov. 23) for the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College.
