Folino, Giffard, O'Mara named to All-Rookie and All-Academic teams
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three members of the Plymouth State University wrestling team were recognized by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) when the league announced its end of season awards winners on Monday.
Freshmen Angelo Folino (New Hartford, Conn.), Noah Giffard (Concord, N.H.) and Trevor O'Mara (Litchfield, N.H.) were each included on the NEWA All-Rookie Team, while the trio also achieved NEWA All-Academic Team status.
To be considered for All-Rookie Team a wrestler must be nominated by their coach, while All-Academic Team members need a 3.20 grade point average and must be deemed a solid contributor by their coach.
All three enjoyed successful rookie campaigns on the mat. Giffard led the Panthers with 17 wins and six pins on the season to claim All-Rookie honors at 197 pounds. The four-time place holder took sixth at the Doug Parker and Ted Reese Invitationals, third at the Williams Open and claimed the title at the Henry Marsh Invitational at UNH in mid-February.
Folino was second on the team with 12 wins and five pins while wrestling at three different weight classes. His All-Rookie nod came at 141 pounds, where he picked up seven wins and earned a third place showing at the Williams Open.
O'Mara posted 11 wins and four pins, both the third most among Panthers, while wrestling exclusively at 149 pounds. His top performance came at the Henry Marsh Invitational, where he topped the field for his first career tournament win.
PSU was held winless in dual meets under second-year head coach Eric Bergeron, but the young squad made significant improvements throughout the course of the season. The team put forth its best performance in the final invitational of the year to place third at the Henry Marsh Invitational.
