PSC picked third in LEC pre-season poll

GORHAM, Maine - The two defending champions, the Keene State College Owls men's and Western Connecticut State University Colonials women's soccer teams, have been tabbed by the conference head coaches as the favorites in the annual Little East Conference soccer coaches preseason polls.

Each team tallied 76 points. The Owls received seven first place votes on the men's side while the Colonial women were the top choice on six ballots.

Keene State is the defending LEC men's regular season and conference tournament champion. The Owls received the conference's automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA national tournament. The Western Connecticut women also finished last season as the conference's regular season and tournament champion, and received the women's automatic NCAA bid.

Plymouth State received 57 points to finish a solid second in the men's poll. Only five points separate the third through sixth place teams. UMass Boston and Western Connecticut each grabbed 37 points to tie for third, while Eastern Connecticut scored 35 for fifth and Rhode Island College earned 32 for sixth. UMass Dartmouth pocketed the other first place vote to finish seventh with 23 points. Southern Maine scored 15 points for eighth place.

On the women's side Keene State was the clear choice for second, gathering the other two first place votes and a total of 68 points. The Owls received an ECAC bid in 1999. Plymouth State edged Eastern Connecticut 46-40, for third place. Southern Maine finished fifth with 34 points. UMass Dartmouth and Rhode Island College tied for sixth with 20 points each. UMass Boston tallied eight points for eighth.

All eight men's conference teams swing into action this weekend while six of the women's teams will initiate play Saturday or Sunday. All the games are non-league matches.

Six of the eight teams will qualify for the LEC tournament at the end of the season. The women's number three seed hosts number six and number four hosts number five in the Quarterfinals October 24. The top two seeds will host the two quarterfinal winners on October 27 in the semifinals. The highest surviving seed then hosts the LEC championship game on October 29 at 12:00 p.m. with the tournament winner receiving the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.

The men will follow the same format with quarterfinals scheduled for October 31, semifinals November 3 and the championship game at 12:00 p.m on November 5.
