St. Michael's upends PSC

PLYMOUTH, NH - Freshman Sara Pope (West Springfield, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Thursday, leading the Saint Michael's College women's soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Plymouth State College at Panther Field.

The win improved the Purple Knights' record to 4-1-1 overall, while the Panthers drop to 5-2.

SMC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first half. Freshman Nikki Pelletier (Salem, Mass.) knocked home a rebound of Pope shot less than eight minutes into the contest for a 1-0 advantage, and Pope collected a through ball from junior Kelly Sampar (Vernon, NJ) and chipped it past PSC keeper Becky Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) in the 22nd minute for a two-goal lead.

Pope then made it a 3-0 game 20 minutes into the second half, converting a crossing pass from freshman Suzanne Fontas (Acton, Mass.).

PSC broke the shutout at the 68-minute mark when junior Carrie Poulin (Westfield, Mass.) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Poulin, who is tied for 17th in the nation in goal scoring, has scored at least one goal in six of PSC's seven games. She has a four-game goal scoring streak, counting seven goals in that span.

Kennedy finished with six saves for PSC. Freshman Tara McCuin (Highgate Center, VT) made eight saves for the Purple Knights.

The Panthers remain at home for Saturday's Little East Conference encounter against Eastern Connecticut (1 p.m.). St. Michael's returns home to host UMass Lowell Saturday at 2 p.m. -- 30 --
