Keene State shuts out PSC in LEC Semi-final

KEENE, N.H. - First half goals by Jennifer Ortisi (Allenstown, NH) and Suzanne Heinkel (Westfield, NJ) lifted the Keene State College women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Plymouth State College in the semi-finals of the Little East Conference Tournament Friday at the Owl Stadium Complex.

The top-seeded Owls (13-5-3) earn the right to host the LEC Championship game Sunday at 12 noon against the winner of the semi-final between third-seeded Southern Maine and second seeded Western Connecticut. The fourth-seeded Panthers, who earlier this season battled KSC to a 1-1 overtime tie in Plymouth, fall to 10-7-2.

The Owls got on the board just 1:13 into the game when Ortisi scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Taking a lead pass from Sarah Nordle (Hoksett, N.H.), the freshman striker beat PSC goalie Becky Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) to the ball and scored just inside the near post.

Heinkel extended KSC's lead to 2-0 with 13 minutes to play in the half when she collected a pass from Colleen Antonini (Plymouth, Mass.) and fired in her second of the season from short range.

Controlling play throughout the game, KSC outshot the Panthers 21-4. Freshman Rachel Simonson (North Haven, Conn.) made two saves to notch her seventh shutout of the season. Kennedy, who made several diving stops for the Panthers, finished with 10 saves.

Undefeated in its last 11 games (9-0-2), Keene State advances to the LEC Championship game for the second straight year. The Owls lost to Western Conn. in last season's title contest.

Plymouth State hopes for an ECAC New England Tournament bid, which will be announced Monday.
