PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Sandra Petlick (New Castle, N.H.) scored one goal and assisted on another Saturday, leading Plymouth State College to a 2-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Little East Conference women's soccer opener for both schools.
Plymouth State's goals both came in the first half. Petlick set up freshman Michelle Dubois (Auburn, Maine) for PSC's first score in the 27th minute. Petlick then scored a goal, assisted by senior Carrie Poulin (Westfield, Mass.) with less than two minutes remaining in the opening frame, her fifth of the season and third in two games.
UMass Dartmouth got on the board midway through the second half, when senior Melanie Ross (Methuen, Mass.) scored at the 68:30 mark. The Corsairs put more pressure on PSC the rest of the way, but could not score the tying goal.
PSC's senior goalie Becky Kennedy (W. Springfield, Mass.) made 12 saves, and UMD keeper Christina Nunes (Westport, Mass.) was credited with five saves.
Plymouth State continues its six-game homestand next Saturday, Sept. 22, with a 1 p.m. clash against UMass Boston. UMass Dartmouth returns home to host Rhode Island College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
