Late comeback leads WCSU past PSC
DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman forward Lia Pelligrino-Young (Hinesburg, Vt.) scored the game-winning goal with 10:22 remaining in the game Sunday as Western Connecticut State University came from behind to defeat Plymouth State College, 2-1, at Midtown Campus Field.
The Colonials, 14-3 overall and 5-0 in the Little East Conference, extended their win streak to six games, matching a six-game run through mid September. PSC dropped its third straight game to fall to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
With PSC leading late in the second half, WCSU junior forward Cherie Bailey (Middletown, Conn.) knotted the game at 1-1 with her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 74th minute. Heather Babington (Bethel, Conn.) set up Bailey's goal and was a calming force in the Colonials' midfield after Plymouth State took the early lead.
The Panthers got on the scoreboard in the fifth minute when sophomore Cathy Berei (Pennington, N.J.) tried to put the ball into the box and wound up with her second goal of the season. Berei's pass took a high bounce over the head of Colonials' keeper Kristen Bartholomew (Bethel, Conn.).
Bartholomew earned the win for Western while making just one save. Senior Becky Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) collected 11 saves on the afternoon for PSC.
PSC concludes the regular season this week with a pair of LEC road contests - Tuesday at Southern Maine (3:30 p.m.) and Saturday at Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.).
