PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Jill Wolters (Vernon, N.J.) scored her second goal of the game with just 42 seconds left in the second overtime Saturday afternoon, leading Plymouth State College to a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island College in a key Little East Conference women's soccer game in the regular season finale for both schools.
The outcome marks RIC's third loss in a row, dropping the Anchorwomen's record to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the LEC, while PSC breaks a four-game losing streak and improves to 6-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play.
These two schools will meet again Tuesday in Providence in the opening round of the LEC Tournament, with PSC as the #5 seed and RIC as the #4 seed. The roles were reversed last season, when fourth-seeded PSC hosted fifth-seeded RIC and prevailed in the opening round at Panther Field, 3-0.
RIC's Kerri Ferreira scored the first goal of the game in the 10th minute of play. PSC answered with a goal two minutes later by senior Carrie Poulin (Westfield, Mass.), her eighth of the season.
RIC's Alexis Bouchard gave the Anchorwomen a 2-1 lead four minutes into the second half. Wolters knotted the score for PSC at 2-2 in the 86th minute with her third of the season, sending the game into overtime.
RIC goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier made 11 saves and senior Becky Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) made 11 saves for the Panthers.
