PSC falls to WNEC in Plattsburgh Tourney
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Molly Burke tallied a hat trick Saturday to lead Western New England College to a 3-0 victory over Plymouth State College in the second game of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic Women's Soccer Tournament, hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh.
Host Plattsburgh State defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 2-0 in the tournament opener, and will face WNEC in Sunday's title game. Plymouth State will face MCLA in the consolation game Sunday at noon.
Burke scored twice in the first half and once in the second to give WNEC the victory. She scored the game-winner at the 14:38 mark on a long shot from the right side and added her second goal at the 30:05 mark when she knocked in her own rebound off Panther goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.).
Burke's third goal came with about six minutes remaining when she rifled in a rebound from six yards out.
Jessica Vital earned the win in goal for the Golden Bears, stopping six shots. Senior Beth Dyer (Hillsboro, N.H.) took the loss for Plymouth State, allowing one goal in 24 minutes before leaving the game with an injured finger.
WNEC outshot PSC 12-9 and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
After Sunday's consolation game, the Panthers return to Plymouth for Wednesday's home opener against Bridgewater State (6:30 p.m.)
