Panthers down Mass. College for first victory
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Plymouth State College scored three second half goals Sunday to defeat Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 3-0, in the consolation game of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic Women's Soccer Tournament, hosted by Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) University.
The victory is PSC's first of the season after a pair of losses, while MCLA evens its mark at 2-2.
Junior midfielder Cathy Berei (Trenton, N.J.) was PSC's representative on the All-Tournament Team. Host Plattsburgh State won the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Western New England College in the championship game.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore Michelle Dubois (Auburn, Maine) put PSC on the board at the 47:44 mark, knocking in a one-time off a cross. Junior Kate Van Tassel (Natick, Mass.) tapped in a rebound off MCLA goalkeeper Beth Conroy at 80:57, and junior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) knocked the ball past Conroy with a minute remaining for the final goal.
The Panthers outshot the opponents 22-8. PSC freshman goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) made three saves for her first career victory and shutout. Conroy made 12 stops for MCLA.
PSC returns to Plymouth for Wednesday's home opener against Bridgewater State at Panther Field (6:30 p.m.)
