Panthers and Anchorwomen tie, 2-2

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State College women's soccer team, on Senior Day, tied Rhode Island College Sunday, 2-2 in double overtime, in a crucial Little East Conference match at Panther Field.

The Panthers, who improved to 4-9-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play, sit tied for fifth in the LEC heading into the final week of the regular season. RIC improving its record to 6-7-2 overall and 2-2-2 in LEC play and moves into fourth place in the conference.

Four minutes into the contest junior Malissa Holden (Warwick, R.I.) scored off a dead ball putting RIC on top 1-0. Sophomore Lauren Tomasso (Cranston, R.I.) made it 2-0 for the Anchorwomen when she picked off a clearing attempt by the Panther defense walked in and beat the PSC keeper.

Freshman Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.) got the Panthers on the board in the 65th minute when she eluded the RIC defense and beat the RIC keeper to the far side. Five minutes later junior Becky Callery (Gill, Mass.) tied the game for PSC, finishing off a rebound from freshman Meagen Leenig (East Fishkill, N.Y.). Two 10-minute overtimes couldn't decide a winner.

PSC senior goalie Beth Dyer (Hillsboro, N.H.) made two saves in the first half, and freshman Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) made two saves the rest of the way. Sophomore keeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, R.I.) stopped six shots for RIC.

PSC completes the regular season with two games this week -- Wednesday (Oct. 30th) at Brandeis (3:00 p.m.) and next Saturday at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.). RIC will play next Saturday (Nov. 2) at Eastern Connecticut.
