PSU Women’s Soccer shuts out UMD in LEC opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University outshot the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth 14-2 Saturday en route to a 1-0 Little East Conference women's soccer victory at Panther Field.

The Panthers, who have finished with sub-.500 records the past two seasons, improve to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while UMD drops to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the LEC. PSU has defeated the Corsairs every year since the LEC started women's soccer in 1990.

Plymouth State scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half. Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) worked a give-and-go with freshman Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.), and Sheridan finished off her third goal of the season.

The hosts used two sophomore goalies in the combined shutout, with Haley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) and Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H./Manchester West) each recording one save in 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Amanda Tavares (Dartmouth, Mass.) was busy is the UMD goal, making 14 saves.

Plymouth State looks to keep its unbeaten streak going Tuesday with a tough non-conference encounter at Bowdoin (4:30 p.m.). UMD plays again Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Babson.
