PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshmen Mary Kate Cunningham (Holden, Mass.) and Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) scored two goals apiece Saturday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University's women's soccer team to an 8-0 Little East Conference victory over UMass Boston at rainy Panther Field.
The Panthers had little trouble with the Beacons, outshooting the visitors 28-2. PSU, which finished with a sub-.500 record the past two seasons, improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while UMB drops to 2-7 overall and 0-2-0 in the LEC.
Cunningham scored the first two goals of the game in the opening 16 minutes to put the Panthers ahead. Pettrey, who assisted on Cunningham's first goal, notched her first of the game to make it a 3-0 contest at halftime, then added her second of the contest just minutes into the start of the second half.
The scoring parade continued for PSU as freshman Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) and senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) added goals, with sophomore Casey Bishop (Topsham, Maine) picking up assists on both tallies. Sophomore Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.) and sophomore Alicia Tefft (Brunswick, Maine) added second-half goals to round out the scoring for the winners.
UMB keeper Kristen Bowes (Quincy, Mass.) had a busy afternoon, making 20 saves. The lopsided score allowed PSU to empty its bench, with all 24 players in uniform seeing action.
Plymouth State plays another home game Tuesday with a non-conference encounter against Worcester State (4:00 p.m.). UMB returns home to play Rhode Island College next Saturday in an LEC affair (1:00 p.m.).
