PSU Women's Soccer edges Colby-Sawyer
NEW LONDON, N.H. - Senior co-captain Kate Van Tassel (Natick, Mass.) scored her first goal of season with just 7:24 remaining in regulation Thursday to give the Plymouth State University women's soccer team a 1-0 non-conference road win over Granite State rival Colby-Sawyer College at the Kelsey Athletic Fields.
The decision marked PSU's third straight shutout victory, and improved the Panthers to 7-1-1 overall. Plymouth State, which finished sub-.500 the past two years, has already surpassed last year's win total (5) and equaled the previous year's amount (7). Colby-Sawyer drops to 5-4-0 on the season.
Van Tassel, who has missed six games this season with injuries, booted in the rebound of a shot which was taken by freshman Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) and deflected by classmate Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) before being stopped by Chargers' freshman goalkeeper Jen Plouffe (North Smithfield, R.I.).
The netminders enabled the game to remain scoreless for the first 82:36 by making several saves apiece from close range. Sophomore Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) turned away seven scoring attempts en route to her third shutout this year, while Plouffe was credited with 10 saves.
Both teams resume league play this Saturday afternoon. Plymouth State is headed to Willimantic, Conn., for a 1:00 p.m. Little East Conference match versus Eastern Connecticut, and Colby-Sawyer will host Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Roger Williams at 3:00 p.m.
