Salem State upends PSU Women’s Soccer

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Emily Mead (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Amy Vershoor (Newbury, Mass.) scored first half goals, and Salem State College went on to defeat Plymouth State University 2-0 Tuesday evening in a non-conference women's soccer game at Panther Field.

Salem State, which hasn't lost a game since Sept. 7, improves to 6-1-3 overall, while PSU was blanked for the second straight outing and drops to 7-3-1.

Mead picked up the ball along the right sideline and looped a shot over the head of PSU sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) at the 11:35 mark to give Salem State a 1-0 lead. The Vikings made it 2-0 with less than a minute remaining in the first half when Vershoor finished off a corner kick by freshman Therese Lefebvre (Weymouth, Mass.).

That turned out to be the only scoring in the game as Salem State kept the Panthers off the board the entire contest. Vikings' junior keeper Kristin Edwards (Wakefield, Mass.) made four saves to earn the shutout, including a stellar stop off PSU freshman Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) with 10 minutes remaining. Quinones also finished with four saves for the Panthers.

Plymouth State returns to Little East Conference action Saturday with a key home game against archrival Keene State (4 p.m.). Salem State returns home to host Fitchburg State on Monday (1:00 p.m.).
