PSU Women’s Soccer blanks Western Conn.

DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) made nine saves, including one on a penalty kick with 30 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon, leading Plymouth State University's women's soccer team to a 1-0 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University at the Westside Athletic Complex.

The Panthers improve to 9-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the LEC, while Western Conn. drops to 11-4-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference play.

Plymouth State got on the scoreboard in the first half at the 29-minute mark when senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) booted the ball over the head of goalkeeper Kristen Bartholomew (Bethel, Conn.) from 25 yards out and found the back of the net.

The Colonials had a chance to tie the game at 1-1 with 30 seconds remaining in the game when they were granted a penalty kick following a takedown in the box. Western's Heather Bartholomew (Bethel, Conn.) was turned away by Quinones, who deflected the floating shot to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.

Corey Zima (Terryville, Conn.) had one last shot for Western with five seconds remaining, but the ball hit the side of the net and the clock ran out. The hosts finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots, but could not get one past Quinones. Kristen Bartholomew finished with one save.

Plymouth State returns home to host Brandeis Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in a non-conference match-up at Panther Field, the final regular season home game. WCSU plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Stevens Tech (N.J.).
