Panther Women’s Soccer blanks Anchorwomen

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Plymouth State University was credited with an "own goal" in the first two minutes Saturday, which turned out to be the only score of the game, and the Panthers went on to defeat Rhode Island College 1-0 in the women's soccer regular season finale for both schools.

The Panthers conclude the regular season at 10-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Little East Conference, while RIC ends up at 6-11-1 and 2-4-1. PSU clinches the #3 seed in next week's annual LEC Tournament, and will host sixth-seeded RIC Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at Panther Field.

The record marks a big improvement for the Panthers over the past two seasons, as they finished 7-10-0 in 2001 and 5-11-1 last year.

PSU freshman Allison Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) tossed a throw-in into the box, and an RIC defender, in an attempt to clear the ball, headed it into the net at the 1:36 mark. That turned out to be all the scoring in the game, despite eight shots for the hosts and six for the visitors.

Panther goalkeepers Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H.) and Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) combined for six saves. RIC keeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, R.I.) finished with five stops.

Tuesday's contest will mark the fourth straight season that PSU and RIC have met in the first round of the LEC Tournament. The Panthers captured wins in 2000 (3-0) and 2001 (6-1) but RIC pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory last season in Plymouth.
