PSU Womens Soccer standout named to Academic All-District Team
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of the starters on the Plymouth State University women's soccer team has now been recognized for her work in the classroom as well as on the soccer field.
Senior Cathy Berei (Trenton, N.J.) was selected to the 2003 Academic All-District I Women's Soccer Team. She was named to the Second Team in the College Division, which includes Division II and III schools from New England and New York. There are 11 members on the First Team, and Berei is one of 11 on the Second Team.
A starting defender for PSU, Berei has helped the Panthers to a 10-6-1 record this season and a third-place finish in the Little East Conference. She leads a defensive unit that has allowed only 20 goals in 17 games this season and posted nine shutouts. She also scored her only goal with 12 minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over Worcester State.
A four-year starter in both soccer and lacrosse, Berei is a former team captain (2001) and All-Little East Conference Second Team pick (2000) in soccer. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Plattsburgh Tourney in 2002, and she received the PSU Athletic Department's prestigious Hartman/Kelly Award for "scholarship, citizenship and dedication" in 2003.
A Physical Education major (Teacher Certification option) with a Health minor, Berei received PSU's Health, PE and Recreation Department's prestigious Beatrice Hodgdon Award. She has been on the President's List and Dean's List three times each, and is Co-President of the Teaching Games For Understanding Club. Berei has plans to travel to the University of Melboune, Australia in December 2003 for an International Conference on Teaching Sport and PE for Understanding.
The Academic All-America program is organized and voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials, be at least a sophomore, and maintain at least a 3.20 grade point average.
