Two PSU Womens Soccer players receive All-LEC Honors
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Two members of the Plymouth State University women's soccer team were recognized for their outstanding seasons Monday when the Little East Conference announced its All-Conference Team for 2003.
Senior Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) highlighted the list by being selected LEC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Star. Classmate Cathy Berei (Trenton, N.J.) was also honored by being named Second Team All-Star. The LEC All-Stars are voted on by the league's eight head coaches.
Sheridan and Berei are the stalwarts on a Panther defense that allowed just 20 goals in 17 contests and posted nine shutouts, a dramatic improvement from the 38 goals allowed last season. They have been the leaders that helped PSU post its first winning record in three seasons.
A 5'7" back, Sheridan has enjoyed a terrific season for the Panthers. In addition to her outstanding defense, she has contributed to the offense. She is tied for the team lead in goals scored with six, and she is second on the team with 13 points. The versatile Sheridan, who has played every position on the field except goalie in her career, was also a Regional All-America on PSU's women's lacrosse team last spring.
A 5'3" back, Berei is a starting defender for the fourth straight season. She also earned All-LEC honors as a freshman in 2000. Berei's only goal this season was a big one, as it came with 12 minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over Worcester State. Berei, who was honored last week with her selection to the Academic All-District I Team, is also a starter on the PSU women's lacrosse squad.
The season continues for Sheridan, Berei and the rest of the team on Wednesday when the Panthers play in the ECAC New England Tournament, PSU's first post-season berth in three years. Plymouth State travels to Salem State for an ECAC first round game (5:00 p.m.).
