Salem State knocks off PSU in ECAC Women’s Soccer

SALEM, Mass. -- Number three seed Salem State College scored three first half goals en route to a 3-2 victory over number six Plymouth State University Wednesday evening in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England women's soccer tournament at Alumni Field.

The Lady Vikings (12-2-6), the defending ECAC tournament champions, advance to the semifinal round Saturday against an opponent and at a location, both to be announced tomorrow. Plymouth State ends its season with a record of 10-7-1.

The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 19:47 when Katie Sheridan (West Sayville, N.Y.) scored off her own rebound. However, Salem State's Diane Dellascio, off a feed from Joanna Stanford, tied the match at 1-1 less than two minutes later. The Lady Vikings would strike twice more before the intermission, with Meaghan Neenan heading home Stanford's corner kick at 30:35 and Lindsay Parker scoring unassisted at 39:19.

Freshman Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) added Plymouth State's second goal at the 87:24 mark. Salem goalkeeper Kristen Edwards was solid in net, making nine saves, including a pair of point blank stops in the matches' final five minutes. Sophomore Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.), who replaced classmate Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H.) in goal with 10 minutes to play in the first half, made three saves for the Panthers.
