Southern Maine roars past PSU Women’s Soccer

GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine scored four times in the second half Saturday afternoon to wipe out a one-goal deficit and defeat Plymouth State University 4-1 in a Little East Conference women's soccer match on the USM Soccer Field.

The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improve to 7-4-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference.  Plymouth State dips to 6-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the conference.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Huskies popped home three goals in the opening 22 minutes of the second half.  Junior Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine) tied the game at the 56:40 mark when she fired a 12-yard shot into the net.  Junior Devin Edwards (South Paris, Maine) gave the Huskies the lead for good at 61:29 as she controlled a ball out of scramble in the box and knocked in a shot from 10 yards out, and senior co-captain Amanda Valeriani (South Portland, Maine) made it 3-1 at 66:25 when she got her head to a cross from senior co-captain Amanda Loomis (Poultney, Vt.) on a set piece.

Junior Kelsey Shamano (Rowley, Mass.) closed out the Huskies' second half blitz with a 20-yard shot that struck the underside of the crossbar and came down just over the goal line.  Sophomore Julia Cyr (Standish, Maine) drew the assist.

The Panthers had the only goal of the opening half as freshman Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) touched home a corner kick taken by sophomore Allison Frobey (Sandy Hook, Conn.) at 42:26.

Southern Maine goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) had one save in the match while junior Beth McAloon (Bedford, N.H./West) had five saves before giving way to junior Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) in the 81st minute.  Quinones did not register a save.  USM had a 16-3 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Huskies will host St. Joseph's College on Monday in their next match.  Plymouth State will host Western Connecticut in an LEC match next Saturday (11:00 a.m.)
