PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University scored three second-half goals Saturday afternoon and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Boston, 4-1, in the Little East Conference women's soccer opener for both schools.
Senior Casey Bishop (Topsham, Maine) gave PSU a 1-0 lead, with an assist from senior Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.), with 13 minutes to play in the first half. UMB tied the match at 1-1 with less than five minutes to go in the half when freshman Katherine Wall (Arlington, Mass.) scored for the Beacons.
Junior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) scored what would be the game-winner seven minutes into the second half. Sophomores Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) and Courtney Joyce (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) added insurance goals for PSU, with senior Meagen Leenig (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Dassatti (Hampstead, N.H.) collecting assists.
PSU finished with an 18-5 advantage in shots. Senior goaltender Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) recorded the win with three saves, while UMB junior Denise Ridge (Milton, Mass.) made nine saves.
Plymouth State, 2-3-1 overall, has another home game Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. against Worcester State, while UMB visits Worcester State on Monday (7:00 p.m.)
