Eastern Conn. holds off PSU Women’s Soccer

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Senior Jenn Orme (Centereach, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to stake the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team to an early lead on the way to a 4-3 Little East Conference victory over Plymouth State University at Thomas Nevers Field.

Eastern extended its unbeaten streak to five matches (4-0-1) after an 0-4 start, improving to 4-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. The Warriors defeated Plymouth State for the seventh straight time as the Panthers dropped to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Little East. ECSU is 24-4-2 in regular-season conference play the last five seasons.

Orme, who moves into a tie for sixth place on Eastern's all-time goals list (21), gave Eastern a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of play and made it 2-0 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. PSU junior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) put the Panthers on the board with just over a minute remaining in the half to cut the deficit to one.

Senior Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) gave the Warriors their two-goal lead back with her team-leading seventh goal of the season just over a minute into the second half, converting the rebound of a shot by Orme. Junior Carrie Fleischer's (Tolland, Conn.) long shot from the right wing was knocked around in the box and rolled over the goal line to put the hosts up 4-1 with nine minutes remaining.

Plymouth State scored twice in a span of 47 seconds in the final minutes, as junior Kara Arnold (Wolfeboro, N.H.) tallied at 87:47 and freshman Ashley Dassatti (Hampstead, N.H.) pulled PSU to within one at 88:34. But Eastern was able to close out the win as time ran out.

PSU senior keeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) finished with 11 saves, while senior Allison Sumecki (Northford, Conn.) made four saves in playing all but four minutes.

Plymouth State plays again Tuesday in a non-conference clash at Colby-Sawyer (4:00 p.m.) Eastern visits Bridgewater State College Tuesday at 4 p.m.
