Salem State blanks PSU Women’s Soccer

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Jillian Rae (South Boston, Mass.) converted a corner kick for the only goal of the game Wednesday afternoon as Salem State College nipped Plymouth State University, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game at Panther Field.

Plymouth State had a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal but could not find the net. Junior goalkeeper Christine Madden (Weymouth, Mass.) made seven saves to post the shutout for the Vikings.

Salem State extended its unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2), improving to 5-2-3 overall. PSU dropped its fourth in a row and fell to 3-7-1 overall. Five of the Panthers' seven losses have come by one goal, and the other two setbacks have been by two goals.

The only goal Wednesday came less than five minutes into the contest. Freshman Keira Lyons (Salem, Mass.) booted a corner kick into the box, where senior Amy Verschoor (West Newbury, Mass.) tapped it to Rae, who knocked the ball into the back of the net at the 4:05 mark.

Both teams had opportunities the rest of the way, but no more goals were scored. PSU had a golden chance to tie it up early in the second half, but a penalty kick by senior Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.) went wide.

PSU completes a three-game homestand Saturday at Panther Field with a Little East Conference contest against Southern Maine (4:00 p.m.) The Vikings, who have played five straight road games, return home to host Fitchburg State on Monday (6:00 p.m.)
