Rhode Island College drops anchor on PSU Womens Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island College scored four unanswered goals in the second half, coming back from a 2-0 deficit, to defeat Plymouth State University, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in collegiate women's soccer action.
The Anchorwomen improve their overall record to 10-4, tying the program record for wins in a season, and are now 3-1 in the Little East Conference. The Panthers fall to 3-10-1 overall and 1-4 in the LEC.
Sophomore Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season in the ninth minute of the game to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead, an advantage they maintained through the first half. Junior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season seven minutes into the second half to put the Panthers up by two.
Sophomore Jessica Cardinal (Warren, R.I.) started the comeback with RIC's first goal in the 57th minute, and senior back Katie Benevides (North Dighton, Mass.) scored the tying goal in the 61st minute, launching a looping shot from 45 yards out. Cardinal added the go-ahead marker in the 69th minute, and sophomore Gina Calenda (Warren, R.I.) scored 27 seconds later to round out the Anchorwomen's offensive output.
Freshman goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made three saves to improve her record to 10-4. PSU senior goalkeeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, VT) made three saves in the loss.
PSU returns home for its final three regular season games, beginning Tuesday with a non-conference contest against Brandeis (4:00 p.m.) RIC hosts Western Connecticut Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
