PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's soccer team got the season off to a strong start Wednesday evening, blanking Norwich University, 3-0, in a non-conference match-up at Panther Field.
PSU, which had a 17-4 advantage in shots, scored all three goals in the second half to win going away. Freshman Morgan McQuaide (Westerly, R.I.) played a strong game in the Panther goal, making two saves and posting the shutout in her career debut.
After a scoreless first half, PSU got on the board 20 minutes into the second half. Freshman Brittany Phelps (Bow, N.H.) collected a corner kick and passed to senior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.), who found the top left corner of the net for the eventual game-winner. McBride has led the team in scoring the past two years.
The Panthers extended their lead to two goals five minutes later on an outstanding individual play by freshman Lauren Lavery (Nashua, N.H.), who dribbled through three defenders and blasted a shot into the goal off the crossbar for her first career score. PSU got the final goal on an own goal with 11 minutes remaining.
Sophomore Tracey Breault (Charlton, Mass.) had a solid game in the Norwich goal, making 12 saves before giving way to freshman Jazmin Stevens (Colebrook, N.H.) with 13 minutes remaining.
PSU, 1-0-0, plays at home again Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Mitchell College. Norwich, 0-2-1, returns home to host Emerson College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
