Keene State knocks PSU Women’s Soccer out of LEC Tournament

KEENE, N.H. - Sophomore Kathleen Keniston (Minneapolis, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist Tuesday evening to lead the third-seeded Keene State College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over sixth-seeded Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference quarterfinal tournament game at the Owls Soccer Stadium.

Riding a season-high six-game winning streak, Keene State (13-7) advances to Friday's semifinals at Danbury. Conn., where it will face second-seed Eastern Connecticut (12-5-2).

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead at the 12:24 mark of the first half when junior Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.) set up freshman Brittany Phelps (Bow, N.H.) for her second goal of the season.

Keene State scored two goals within a five-minute span three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Keniston finished off a cross from Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) and Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.) converted a cross from Keniston. KSC goalie Liz Rosen (Swanzey, N.H.) preserved the Owls' lead with a diving save against Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J.) later in the half.

Keniston gave Keene State a 3-1 lead with her second goal of the game, and seventh of the season, at the 71:15 mark of the second half. A header by Renee Halsey (Francestown, N.H.) sent Keniston in on the breakaway. Amy St. John (Barre, Vt.) completed the scoring for the Owls when she headed in a corner kick from Wagner, who finished the game with a goal and an assist.

Rosen, who had a strong game in goal, finished with 12 saves. Freshman Morgan McQuaide (Westerly, R.I.) turned aside three shots for the Panthers.

PSU, which finished with a 7-8-2 overall record, ended up with its worst loss of the season. The previous seven losses had come by a total of eight goals.
