Laverys goal lifts PSU Womens Soccer past Green Mtn.
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Lauren Lavery (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) scored the only goal of the game five minutes into overtime Thursday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University to a 1-0 victory over Green Mountain College in the women's soccer season opener at Panther Field.
Lavery collected a loose ball just inside the box on the left-hand side, and sent a looping ball over the reach of the goalkeeper into the right side of the net for the game-winning goal. It was the third straight season-opening victory for PSU, while Green Mountain, which dropped a 4-2 decision to Colby-Sawyer in its season debut on Tuesday, dropped to 0-2.
It was a much closer game than last season, when PSU defeated the Eagles, 6-0, in Vermont. PSU had a 28-10 advantage in shots this year, but couldn't score until the overtime session.
Freshman goalkeeper Karen Davidson (Seymour, Conn.) played an excellent game in the Green Mountain goal, making several outstanding saves and finishing the game with 19 saves.
The Panthers used both of their freshman goalkeepers. Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) started and made three saves in the first half, while Stephanie Regina (Howell, N.J.) came on to start the second half and played the rest of the game, finishing with two saves.
The Panthers are back in action Saturday with a non-conference match-up at New England College (2:30 p.m.), while Green Mountain plays its home opener on Saturday against Southern Vermont (12:00 p.m.)
