BOSTON, Mass. - Seniors Stacy DiSabato (Manchester, N.H./Central) and Gianna Minervini (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) combined on a pair of second-half goals Wednesday night to lead the Plymouth State University women's soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Simmons College.
It took nearly 40 minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard, then the teams traded goals in the last six minutes of the half. Junior Rebecca Wilson (Clinton, Conn.) put the Panthers on the board with just over six minutes on the first-half clock, and junior Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.) answered for the Sharks with two minutes to play.
DiSabato scored in the first minute of the second half, with an assist from Minervini, to put PSU ahead for good, and Minervini added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute, from DiSabato.
Simmons actually had a 25-16 advantage in shots in the game, 11-8 in the first half and 14-8 after the break. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Regina (Howell, N.J.) finished with 10 saves for PSU to record the victory.
Plymouth State, 1-0-1, heads to Vermont on Saturday for a non-conference match-up at Green Mountain College (1:00 p.m.) Simmons, 3-1-1, plays Saturday and Sunday in the Wellesley College Tournament.
