PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Little East Conference has announced the results of the women’s soccer preseason coaches’ poll and Plymouth State University has been picked to finish sixth in this year’s race. The votes were cast by the conference’s eight head coaches.
The Panthers, led by first-year head coach Cindy Bennett, received 21 points in this year’s poll to end up in the sixth spot. Defending LEC regular season champion Keene State College and defending tournament champion Eastern Connecticut State University shared the top spot in the poll, although KSC received four first-place votes to two for ECSU. Western Connecticut State University garnered the remaining two first-place votes to finish third in the balloting with 49 points, and UMass Boston rounded out the top half in fourth place with 36 points. The bottom half of the poll included the University of Southern Maine (25 points), Plymouth State (21), UMass Dartmouth (20), and Rhode Island College (19).
PSU went 5-2-1 in its first eight games last season but slumped to a 1-7-1 mark the final month of the year to wind up at 6-9-2 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The Panthers open this year’s campaign under Coach Bennett at Fitchburg State on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 12 noon.
The LEC women's soccer regular season slate, now in its 21st year, includes one match against the other seven schools. The conference tournament, which includes the top six teams, is the first week in November, with the LEC champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
