Simmons nips PSU Womens Soccer
Sharks down Panthers on late Beauchamp goal
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) tallied the only goal of the game on a beautiful strike with five minutes remaining in the second half Tuesday evening as Simmons College defeated Plymouth State University, 1-0, in non-conference women’s soccer action at Panther Field.
The match was scoreless for nearly 85 minutes until Beauchamp took a feed from senior Allie Megna (North Hampton, N.H.) in the middle of the field and blasted a shot from about 30 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal. It was the first goal of the season for the Sharks after nearly 175 minutes of play, and gave Simmons its first win of the year (1-1).
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half but could not capitalize. PSU had a 10-6 shot advantage in the half, including three good chances in the closing minutes. Freshman Molly Todd (Epsom, N.H.) got one past the Simmons keeper but the shot trickled wide. A minute later, senior Rebecca Wilson (Clinton, Conn.) rang a shot off the crossbar, and freshman Cassie Graham (Foster, R.I.) did the same with a minute to go in the half.
Shots were hard to come by in the second half as the defenses kept the scoring opportunities to a minimum. It looked like the match was headed into overtime when Beauchamp scored the game-winner with 5:41 on the clock.
Sophomore keeper Ashley Donaghey (Framingham, Mass.) made eight saves in the Simmons goal to record her first shutout of the season. Junior Angelina LaBroad (Hampton, N.H.) finished with six saves for PSU.
PSU, 0-2, will look for its first win of the season Thursday at New England College (4:00 p.m.). Simmons is back in action this weekend at the Wellesley Tournament.
