PSU Women’s Soccer blanks Castleton
Lozano scores game-winner; LaBroad earns shutout
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Anna Lozano scored the only goal of the game a minute into the second half Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated Castleton State College, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action at Panther Field.
Lozano's goal, the first of her career, came on a strong free kick from about 25 yards out that sailed past a diving goalkeeper into the upper half of the net. That stood as the only goal of the match, giving the Panthers a victory in their home opener. PSU is now 2-1 overall while Castleton drops to 3-2.
Senior goalie Angelina LaBroad recorded the shutout for PSU in her first appearance of the season, making nine saves for her fifth career whitewash. She was up to the task in the first half, making eight stops as Castleton outshot the Panthers 10-0 in the first 45 minutes.
PSU regrouped and doubled up the Spartans in second half shots, 6-3, but Castleton finished with a 13-6 margin in shots for the game. Castleton keeper Ericka Davis made two saves for the visitors, both in the second half.
Both teams will be on the road Wednesday with non-conference matches as PSU makes a visit to Green Mountain College for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off and Castleton travels to the Mass. College of Liberal Arts for a 4:00 p.m. start.
