D'Agati scores for Panthers in LEC setback
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Daniela Marchitto (Orange, Conn.) scored three goals Saturday afternoon to lift Eastern Connecticut State University to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's soccer game at Panther Field.
Marchitto scored once in the first half and twice in the second, giving her five goals on the season. Senior Chelsea Downer (Colchester, Conn.) also scored for Eastern as the Warriors improve to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. PSU got a goal from junior Sam D'Agati (Reading, Mass.) on a second-half penalty kick, but the Panthers fall to 1-5-0 overall and 0-2 in the Little East.
Marchitto put the Warriors on the board just five minutes into the contest when she received a pass near the top of the box, spun around and fired the ball into the right side of the goal. Eastern extended the lead to 2-0 midway through the first half when Downer came down the right side with the ball, made a nice move to the inside past a PSU defender and knocked the ball past an outstretched Panther keeper.
Eastern had an 8-3 margin in shots in the first half. PSU's best chances to score came on pair of shots by sophomore Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.), but one went over the crossbar and the other was stopped by Eastern keeper Mackenzie MacLeod (Northfield, Conn.)
Marchitto tallied her second goal of the game for Eastern just two minutes into the second half, receiving a touch pass on the left side from junior Tamar Merheb (Bethel, Conn.) and finishing off the goal for her second of the game.
The Panthers broke through five minutes into the second half when a forward was knocked down in the offensive box, giving PSU a penalty kick. D'Agati stepped up and blasted a shot into the left side of the goal for her second of the season, both on penalty kicks. The goal gave PSU some momentum but the Panthers were unable to capitalize, and Marchitto finished off the scoring with six minutes remaining, converting a nice cross from the right side by senior Taylor Buchanon (Ellington, Conn.).
The Warriors finished with a 19-10 margin in shots. MacLeod made four saves to earn the win for Eastern, while senior keeper Chelsea Duval (Dover, N.H.) stopped seven shots in the PSU goal.
PSU is right back in action on Monday with a non-conference game at Castleton State College. Eastern plays a pair of home games next week, beginning Wednesday vs. Salem State.
