Women’s Soccer falls to Rhode Island College

Anchorwomen sink Panthers in LEC game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Gabrielle Turner scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead Rhode Island College to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's soccer game at Panther Field.

Junior Cassie Graham (Foster, R.I.) scored a goal in the 65th minute to pull PSU to within a goal, but Turner's second of the game clinched the win for RIC. The Anchorwomen (3-10, 1-5 LEC) notched their first Little East win since downing Southern Maine in 2010.

The Panthers played solid defense in the first half and outshot RIC, 7-5. Turner broke the deadlock by netting her third of the season in the 25th minute. Sophomore Megan Saucier (Freetown, Mass.) rang a shot of the cross bar late in the half as the visitors went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The second half showed a higher paced effort from both sides.  Sophomore Danielle Peloquin scored for the Anchorwomen just three minutes in to the half.  The Panthers got on the board with just over 20 minutes to play as junior Molly Todd (Epsom, N.H.) made a crossing pass to Graham, who put it past the keeper to get Plymouth State to within one goal.

Despite turning up the pressure late in the game, PSU couldn't net the game-tying goal. The Anchorwomen put in a goal with under a minute left as Turner netted her second of the game on a breakaway for her fourth goal of the season.

PSU had a good effort from junior goalie Hannah Kimball (Epping, N.H.) who made a couple key saves late and finished with three stops. RIC keeper Audrey Maia recorded 11 saves on the day, with five coming in the second half.

Plymouth State will play its final home game of the season Sunday against Wheaton College (1:00 p.m.).  Rhode Island College will play again on Thursday at Lasell College.
