Panthers drop one-goal game to Bears
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forwards Emily Lane (Parsonsfield, Maine) and Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, Mass.) notched second-half goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over non-league foe Plymouth State University at Swenson Field.
In search of their first goal of the season, the Bears outshot the Panthers 14-1 in the opening stanza but were unable to dent the scoreboard. Just 53 second into the second half, however, Jonasson scored off a cross from sophomore Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, Mass.) to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived however as Plymouth State scored an own goal less than six minutes later when a Bridgewater defender headed in a corner kick.
Lane would tally the game-winner in the 60th minute after Jonasson sent her in on a breakaway. Lane dribble around the PSU goaltender and delivered a shot into the unguarded net.
The Bears finished with a 25-4 shot advantage for the game and a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks. The hosts also rang the post five times.
BSU sophomore netminder Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) finished with two saves to record her first collegiate victory. Freshman keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) turned aside six shots between the pipes for the Panthers.
The Bears host Rhode Island College on Wednesday night at seven. The Panthers travel to Colby-Sawyer College on Tuesday afternoon for a four o'clock game with the Chargers, their fourth straight road game to open the 2013 season.
