PSU Women’s Soccer upended by Gordon

Bell scores as Panthers suffer fifth one-goal loss

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Kendra Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) set up both of her team's goals Wednesday evening as Gordon College defeated Plymouth State University, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer match at Panther Field.

Senior Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) and sophomore Jamie Breton (Concord, N.H.) notched goals for the Fighting Scots, while junior Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.) scored on a penalty kick for the Panthers.  PSU maintained solid pressure in the Gordon zone in the second half but couldn't score the tying goal.  Gordon improves to 13-2 this fall while the Panthers drop to 4-9 overall after suffering their fifth one-goal loss of the season.

Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game as a Gordon defender was called for a hand-ball in the PSU offensive zone.  Bell stepped up for the penalty kick and deposited the ball into the right corner of the goal for an early advantage. It was Bell's fourth goal of the season.

The Fighting Scots battled back to tie the game just six minutes later when Woudenberg sent a crossing pass from the left end line, and McSherry was perfectly positioned to tap the ball into a wide-open goal for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Gordon continued to pressure the PSU goal, out-shooting the home team 10-2 in the first half, but had to settle for a 1-1 deadlock at the intermission.

Breton tallied the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal in the 64th minute on a play very similar to the Fighting Scots' first goal, only at the other end of the field.  Woudenberg sent a cross from the left end line, and this time Breton was there to slam home the ball and put Gordon on top, 2-1. Breton now has six goals this season.

PSU upped the pressure on the Scots' goal, getting five second-half shots off, but couldn't penetrate the Gordon defense.  Sophomore keeper McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) made one save to record the win for the visitors.

Freshman keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) had another solid performance in the Panther goal area, finishing with 10 saves.

Both teams return to conference action on Saturday as Plymouth State hosts the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Little East Conference affair at 4:30 p.m. and Gordon visits Wentworth for a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.

PSU will be celebrating Senior Day on Saturday, honoring the seven Panther seniors prior to the game.
