Messler scores lone goal for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 4-1 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's soccer match at Panther Field.

The Corsairs (9-5-1) moved into fourth place in the conference standings with a 3-2 mark, while the Panthers (4-10) slipped to 1-4 in the Little East.

Friedland paced UMass Dartmouth with four points, while senior Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, Mass.) was one off her pace with a marker and a helper.  Freshman Lucy Jensen (Boxborough, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate goal to cap the visitors scoring.

The Corsairs opened the scoring in the 36th minute, when Friedland registered her second goal of the season off an assist from Van Ness.  Less than six minutes later, Friedland posted her first multi-goal game of the season to give the visitors a 2-0 lead entering the intermission.

UMD stretched its advantage to three goals in the 50th minute, when senior Tori Pierce (Tiverton, R.I.) sent a through ball to Van Ness, who deposited her fourth marker of the season.  Jensen penned an insurance goal into her ledger in the 69th minute to provide the visitors with a commanding 4-0 lead.

Plymouth State finally got on the board in the 82nd minute, when senior Carol Messier (Durham, N.H.) potted her first marker on the campaign.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Wednesday when the Corsairs host Fitchburg State in a non-conference match. PSU will host Castleton on Tuesday.
