Little East honors for PSU Women’s Soccer and Tennis players

Barker, Jakubas earn weekly recognition for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference (LEC) Monday with top weekly honors for their performances in PSU season openers over the weekend.

Senior Courtney Barker (Yarmouth, Maine) was named LEC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, and junior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) was tabbed as LEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. It is the first weekly conference honor for both individuals.

A 5'8" defender, Barker played a key role in PSU's 3-0 season-opening victory over Western New England University last Saturday. She anchored a Panther defense that kept the Golden Bears off the scoreboard, limiting the visitors to 10 shots, and Barker help set up the game-winner with an assist off a corner kick on PSU' first goal of the game.

A 5'6" junior and a newcomer to Plymouth State, Jakubas swept her No. 1 singles match against conference foe University of Southern Maine on Sunday, 6-3, 6-0. She also teamed up with her sister Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Zara Jakubas is a transfer from Rutgers University, where she did not play intercollegiate tennis.

The Panther women's soccer and tennis teams will be in action this week; the soccer squad visits Salem State University Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and hosts Bridgewater State University Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at The New Hampton School, and the tennis team hosts Colby-Sawyer College on Wednesday at The Holderness School (3:30 p.m.) before traveling to Johnson State College on Saturday for a 12 noon match.
